CA Final IBS case study preparation: 4 cases, 4 hours
CA Final IBS case study preparation comes down to three things: solve ICAI's Case Study Digest cases against the clock, build an open-book kit you can search in seconds, and write every answer about the company in the case, not the textbook. The paper gives you five case studies of 25 marks, you attempt any four in four hours, so each case gets about 55 minutes.
Quick answer: Paper 6 (IBS) is open book, 4 hours, 5 cases, attempt 4. Each case = 10 marks of MCQs + 15 marks of descriptive questions. ICAI's examiners mark down copied theory again and again; applied answers score.
This matters now because Paper 6 is the last paper of Group II on Friday, 13 November 2026. ICAI facts below are linked to ICAI's own pages; the time plan, kit and worked example are our suggestions, and we say so.
CA Final IBS paper pattern for Nov 2026
From ICAI's Guidance Notes for Final, November 2026 (PDF) (opens in a new tab) and exam schedule (PDF) (opens in a new tab):
| Paper 6: Integrated Business Solutions | |
|---|---|
| Format | "Case study based open book exam of four hours duration" |
| Time | 2 to 6 PM (IST), with 15 minutes of reading time from 1:45 PM |
| Cases | Five case studies of 25 marks each; you attempt any four |
| Inside each case | 10 marks of MCQs and 15 marks of descriptive questions "involving computation/analysis/interpretation" |
| MCQ share | 40% of the paper, against 30% in Papers 1 to 5 |
| Date | Friday, 13 November 2026, last day of Group II |
In the May 2026 paper, each case had 5 MCQs followed by three descriptive questions of 4 to 6 marks each (Final Group II suggested answers, May 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)). ICAI's prospectus calls Paper 6 a "Multi-disciplinary case study involving Papers 1 to 5 at the final level along with Self-Paced Online Modules Sets A and B and Strategic Management", and places the whole paper at skill Level III, "Evaluation & Synthesis" (ICAI scheme at a glance, PDF (opens in a new tab)). The pattern for all six papers is in the CA Final exam pattern guide.
CA Final IBS exam time duration: a plan for each case
The paper runs 4 hours (240 minutes) for 100 marks, so 2.4 minutes per mark: a 25-mark case is worth about 55 to 60 minutes. ICAI sets the clock; how you split it is our suggestion.
| Clock | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1:45 to 2:00 | Reading time: skim all five cases' questions and pick your four |
| 2:00 to 2:55 | Case A (your strongest), 25 marks |
| 2:55 to 3:50 | Case B |
| 3:50 to 4:45 | Case C |
| 4:45 to 5:40 | Case D |
| 5:40 to 6:00 | Buffer: finish a computation, check the OMR, score out blank pages |
Inside each 55-minute case:
| Block | Minutes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Read the questions, then the case with a pen | 15 | The questions tell you which facts to mark |
| Five MCQs (10 marks) | 12 | Mark them on the OMR as you go |
| Three descriptive questions (15 marks) | 28 | About 9 minutes each, a little more for a computation |
Pick cases by their descriptive questions. Once you choose a case you answer all of it, MCQs included. The same plan sits alongside the Papers 1 to 5 plan in how to attempt a CA Final paper in 3 hours.
IBS case study digest: how to use ICAI's free cases
Everything is on ICAI's Paper 6: Integrated Business Solutions page (opens in a new tab):
- IBS Case Study Digest (opens in a new tab) (revised edition, July 2024): 50 case studies with solutions.
- IBS Case Study Digest Volume II (opens in a new tab) (July 2025): 35 more.
- Case Studies 1 to 15, case studies from the Students' Journal, and the weekly case studies BoS posted from April to July 2025.
ICAI's list of study material for November 2026 names both Digests for Paper 6 (ICAI notice, PDF (opens in a new tab)). The Volume II preface tells you how questions are built: "Most questions are structured around verbs such as analyse, interpret, advise, recommend, and evaluate", and MCQs come as "multiple-correct options, most likely/appropriate options, and 'not correct' type MCQs".
Is there an IBS case study digest index?
ICAI's Digests open with a contents list by case name (Caber Cabs, KG Airlines, Doormato and so on). There is no subject-wise index. Make your own as you solve: one line per case, with the subjects each question used.
| Case (Digest, no.) | FR / Ind AS | AFM | Audit | DT | IDT | SM framework |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vol I, Case 13 | ||||||
| Vol II, Case 12 |
By the exam this table becomes your fastest revision list: a weak column shows where to go back.
How many Digest cases should you solve?
ICAI doesn't prescribe a number. Our suggestion: a few untimed to learn the style, then timed cases of 55 minutes, then at least three full 4-hour papers from 2 PM. Past Paper 6 question papers and suggested answers, including May 2026, are on ICAI's suggested answers page (opens in a new tab), and ICAI's MTPs included Paper 6 (free CA Final mock test papers).
How to prepare IBS for CA Final: a three-stage strategy
Stage 1: the core papers first
IBS has no syllabus of its own. It draws on FR, AFM, Audit, DT, IDT, SPOM Sets A and B and Strategic Management. A weak GST or Ind AS point in Paper 5 or Paper 1 stays weak in a case, with less time to look it up. Keep Strategic Management alive: the examiners' comments below show its frameworks being asked and poorly answered.
Stage 2: build your open-book kit
ICAI lets you bring "your own material in hard form", such as "study materials, practice manuals, revisionary test paper supplied by ICAI, text books, bare Acts, notes by students or any other reference material". No phones or other electronic devices, no exchanging material in the hall, and answers "in their own handwriting"; pasting material into the booklet counts as unfair means (Guidance Notes, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
The two Digests alone run to over 1,000 PDF pages, so carry less and find it faster. Our suggested kit:
| Item | Set it up like this |
|---|---|
| One-page master index | Framework or provision → book → page. You look here, not at contents pages |
| Strategic Management notes | One page per framework, each element with a "how to apply" prompt |
| Your own summary notes for FR, Audit, DT, IDT | Tabbed by topic, not by chapter number |
| Bare Act / standards extracts you actually use | Only the sections and SAs you can find in seconds |
| Calculator | Battery-operated, up to 6 functions, 12 digits, two memories; no scientific calculator |
Practise with exactly this kit from your first timed case. A kit you first open in the hall is slower than no kit.
Stage 3: full 4-hour papers
Stamina, timing and case choice only show up in a full paper. Write it by hand, from 2 PM, with your kit on the desk. CA mock tests are only useful for IBS if they run the full 4 hours with all five cases. Our CA Final IBS mock tests give you full case-study papers of 4 hours each on the latest ICAI pattern.
How to write an IBS case study answer
A structure that fits most descriptive IBS questions:
- Name the framework or provision in one line. No long definitions.
- Apply each element to the case, using its facts and numbers.
- Do the computation fully, with working notes and stated assumptions.
- End with a recommendation in the role the question gives you: CFO, auditor, tax counsel.
A worked mini-example (written by us, not ICAI's)
This case is our own illustration of the structure. It is not taken from any ICAI paper or Digest.
Case extract. Kalpa Foods Ltd. sells packaged snacks through supermarkets across India. Its plants run at 60% capacity. The board is considering frozen ready-to-eat meals, sold through the same supermarkets. The project needs a cold-chain investment of ₹40 crore and is expected to give a cash inflow after tax of ₹10 crore a year for 6 years. The cost of capital is 12%.
Question (6 marks). As CFO, identify the growth strategy using Ansoff's matrix and advise the board whether to invest.
Model structure:
Strategy. Under Ansoff's matrix, a new product (frozen meals) in an existing market (the same supermarket customers) is product development.
Application. Kalpa can use its existing retail relationships and spare capacity, but cold-chain logistics are a capability it doesn't have yet.
Computation. PV of inflows = ₹10 crore × 4.1114 (annuity factor, 12%, 6 years) = ₹41.11 crore (WN 1). NPV = ₹41.11 crore − ₹40 crore = ₹1.11 crore.
WN 1. Annuity factor = (1 − 1.12⁻⁶) ÷ 0.12 = 4.1114.
Recommendation. The NPV is positive, so the project adds value, but the margin is thin: inflows only need to fall below about ₹9.73 crore a year (₹40 crore ÷ 4.1114), under 3%, for NPV to turn negative. Invest, subject to a sensitivity review of demand and cold-chain costs before committing the full ₹40 crore.
Every block can carry marks, and the recommendation uses the case's own numbers. How ICAI splits marks between blocks isn't published; see step marking in CA exams.
What ICAI's examiners say about IBS answers
The same comment comes back attempt after attempt: students wrote the theory, not the case.
May 2026 (Final Group II suggested answers, PDF (opens in a new tab)):
- Q1.6 (BELOW AVERAGE): most "could not discuss the Business Model Canvas with reference to the information given in the case study" and "preferred to copy the general description of the indicated elements from the study material."
- Q4.7 (AVERAGE): most "discussed in a generalised manner" the auditor's key considerations, "not in line with SA 800, SA 805, SA 200, SA 240, SA 550, SA 570 and SA 260."
- Q5.6 (BELOW AVERAGE): most could not explain how to align all seven elements of McKinsey's 7S framework.
- Q1.8 (POOR): most "failed to correctly compute the amount of depreciation including any additional depreciation allowable" under the Income-tax Act.
January 2026 (Final Group II examiners' comments, PDF (opens in a new tab)):
- Q2.6 (POOR): students "chose to copy the quality costs incurred as provided in the case study and copy the definition of quality costs as provided in the study material without answering the requirement of question."
- Q3.6 (POOR): most "preferred to simply copy the description of four pillars of Value for Money as provided in the study material."
Where students applied a clear provision to the facts, as in the buy-back tax note in May 2026 Q2.7, performance was rated GOOD. More across all papers: ICAI examiners' comments: common mistakes in CA exams.
Frequently asked questions
Is the IBS paper an open book exam?
Yes. ICAI's Guidance Notes call Paper 6 a "case study based open book exam of four hours duration". You may bring your own hard-copy material, but no electronic devices, and you must write in your own handwriting.
How many case studies are there in CA Final IBS, and how many do I attempt?
Five case studies of 25 marks each; you attempt any four. Each case has 10 marks of MCQs and 15 marks of descriptive questions (Guidance Notes, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
How much time should I give one IBS case study?
About 55 minutes: 4 hours is 2.4 minutes per mark, and a case is 25 marks. That leaves 20 minutes of buffer after four cases. This split is our suggestion.
Where can I get the CA Final IBS question paper and suggested answers?
On ICAI's suggested answers page (opens in a new tab); the May 2026 Group II file includes Paper 6 and the examiners' comments. Links by level are also on our CA Final free resources page.
Does ICAI publish weightage for IBS?
No section-wise weightage is published for Paper 6. See CA Final syllabus and paper weightage for the other papers.
Practise IBS as full 4-hour case papers
IBS only improves with full papers and honest feedback. Our CA Final IBS mock tests are part of a CA test series built on ICAI's pattern: you write by hand, upload one PDF, and within 24 hours get your checked copy with step-wise marks, the reason for every mark cut with the correct line to write, and question-wise analysis of concept, presentation and working notes. The rest of the CA Final Group II mock tests cover DT and IDT the same way.
