Is CA test series worth it? A 3-question test for CA Final

· Updated · 10 min read

Is CA test series worth it for CA Final? Yes, if you need your descriptive answers checked or have run out of ICAI papers you haven't seen; no, if you still have unwritten ICAI papers and a strict way to check them. ICAI already gives you free mock test papers, RTPs and past papers with answers. What it doesn't give is a checked answer sheet, and that is what a paid series is really for.

For CA Final November 2026, Group I starts on 2 November (ICAI schedule, PDF (opens in a new tab)), so you have about four weeks to decide and use whatever you choose. This post lays out the trade-off honestly, with every ICAI fact linked to its source.

Is CA test series worth it? The 3-question test

Answer these three in order. If you say "yes" to any one, a paid test series is likely worth it for you.

QuestionIf yesIf no
1. Have I already written ICAI's recent MTPs, RTPs and past papers for my subjects? You need new papers: paid helpsWrite ICAI's free papers first
2. When I self-check, do I give myself marks I'm not sure I'd get in the exam? You need outside checking: paid helpsSelf-checking may be enough
3. Are my marks stuck, and I can't see why?You need reasons for each mark cut: paid helpsKeep going with free papers

Whatever you answer, start with ICAI's free papers. A paid series sits next to them, not in place of them.

What you get free from ICAI

ICAI's Board of Studies publishes full papers, answers and the syllabus free, for every attempt:

Free from ICAIWhat you getWhere we list it
Mock Test Papers (MTP), Series I and IITwo full papers per subject on fixed dates, with an answer key within 48 hoursCA Final MTPs
Revision Test Papers (RTP)Revision questions with detailed answers, opening with the law and cut-off for the attemptCA Final RTPs
Past question papers and suggested answersReal papers from recent attempts, with ICAI's answers and examiners' commentsCA Final past papers
Study materialThe syllabus itselfCA Final study material

For November 2026, MTP Series I ran from 9 to 21 September and Series II from 23 September to 5 October 2026 (announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)). Our free CA Final test series guide counts the papers and turns them into a four-week plan. The difference between an RTP and an MTP is in ICAI RTP and MTP explained.

For most students this free set gives more full papers than they can write before November.

What free material doesn't include: a checked copy

ICAI gives you the answers, not a checked copy. The MTP announcement says students "examine their answers with respect to the Answer Keys and self-assess their performance" (announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)), and the RTP says its detailed answers are there "to enable the students to do a self-assessment" (RTP Group I, PDF (opens in a new tab)). The announcement doesn't say how physical MTPs held at ICAI branches are checked, so ask your branch if you write there.

What a paid CA test series adds

Two things free material can't: new papers you haven't seen, and a checked copy.

New papers on the current pattern and amendments

You may have already seen ICAI's MTPs, RTPs and recent past papers while studying. A paid series should give you papers written for your attempt: for November 2026, ICAI's pattern of 30 marks of case-based MCQs and 70 marks of descriptive questions in Papers 1 to 5, and a 4-hour case-study Paper 6 where you answer four of five case studies (Guidance Notes, PDF (opens in a new tab)), with amendments up to the 30 April 2026 cut-off.

A checked copy, with reasons

This is the main thing you pay for. Checking your own descriptive answers is hard to keep honest: it is easy to give yourself a step you didn't really write, or miss that your working notes were incomplete. A checked copy should give you step-wise marks, the reason for every mark cut and what you should have written instead, fast enough to fix it before your next paper.

A mini-example: your self-check says 6/8 on an audit question because you named the right Standard on Auditing. A strict checker gives 3/8, because you stated the SA but never applied it to the facts. That gap, repeated across six papers, is the difference between what you think you'll score and what you will.

Why "free PDF" copies of paid series aren't worth it

They add nothing ICAI's free papers don't, and bring three problems.

  1. They're often shared without permission. If a paid series is being handed out free and the provider didn't release it that way, it was copied. ICAI's own RTP and Model Test Paper books carry the notice "All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced ... without prior permission, in writing, from the publisher" (RTP Group I, PDF (opens in a new tab)). Get ICAI's material from ICAI.
  2. You can't tell which attempt they were written for. ICAI labels its own papers with the attempt: its CA Final Model Test Paper book for Group II says "Relevant for May, 2025 and November 2025 examinations" (PDF (opens in a new tab)). A forwarded PDF often has no date and no source, so you can't tell whether its tax and law answers still hold. See what's applicable for your CA attempt.
  3. No corrections. Even official answers get corrected: on 15 September 2026, ICAI issued a corrigendum for a "typographical error" in the answer to Question 11 of the November 2026 Final Paper 2 RTP (corrigendum, PDF (opens in a new tab)). A forwarded PDF has no such route.

Which test series is best for CA Final?

No provider can honestly claim to be the best; the best one for you passes five checks.

  1. Written for November 2026, on the 30 April 2026 amendment cut-off.
  2. On ICAI's current pattern: 30 marks MCQs + 70 descriptive in Papers 1 to 5; IBS as five cases, attempt four, in 4 hours.
  3. Full-syllabus papers, 100 marks in 3 hours, close to the exam.
  4. Step-wise checking with a reason for every mark cut.
  5. A checked copy back within a day or two, and something to read before you pay.

How to weigh the price against this is in CA Final test series price and fees. The live prices and paper counts at every level are side by side in the most affordable CA test series for Nov 2026 and Jan 2027. The longer list for any level is in how to choose a CA test series.

How to read a CA test series review

Look for specifics about the checked copy, not star ratings. Reviews on Reddit, Quora and Telegram groups are useful only if they tell you:

  • What came back: a total, or marks per step with reasons?
  • How long it took: days or weeks?
  • Which attempt the papers were for.
  • Whether the reviewer actually wrote the papers, not just bought them.

A review that says "great series, cleared CA" tells you nothing you can check. One that says "copy back in a day, every mark cut explained" does.

When a CA test series is not worth it

Be honest with yourself on these:

  • You haven't finished the syllabus once. Revise first; a full mock on half-revised chapters mostly tells you what you already know.
  • You won't have time to write the papers. Unwritten papers are money spent for nothing.
  • You have a study partner who checks your copies strictly, step by step, against ICAI's suggested answers (the method is in how to check your answers with ICAI suggested answers), and you still have unwritten ICAI papers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a paid CA Final test series worth it?

It is worth it if you need new papers beyond ICAI's, or you need your descriptive answers checked with a reason for each mark cut. If you have unwritten ICAI papers and a reliable way to check them, you may not need one.

Is there a free CA Final test series?

Yes: ICAI's Mock Test Paper Series I and II, free with answer keys, plus RTPs, past papers with suggested answers and Model Test Papers. You check your own copy. Where to download each is in our free CA Final test series guide.

Is test series necessary for CA Final?

No rule says so, and many students pass on ICAI's papers alone. What is necessary is writing full papers in the real time and getting them checked honestly; a test series is one way to get the checking.

Does ICAI check MTP answer sheets?

For the virtual series, no: ICAI uploads an answer key and students self-assess (announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)). For physical tests at branches, ask your branch. Our guide on checking your ICAI MTP shows how to do it yourself.
