A CA Final Group I test series should give you full-length papers in Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management and Advanced Auditing, set on ICAI's current pattern and written in one 3-hour sitting each. Each paper should come back checked step by step, so you know where the marks went before you sit the real ones. For the full CA Final test series, including Group II, see the CA Final test series page.
The three Group I papers and their pattern
From ICAI's Guidance Notes for CA Final (PDF) (opens in a new tab), each Group I paper is 100 marks in 3 hours, from 2 to 5 PM:
- 30 marks of MCQs, case scenario or case-study based, compulsory, with no negative marking. ICAI's Mock Test Papers for Nov 2026 have 23 MCQs in each paper, 16 of 1 mark and 7 of 2 marks, and so do our Nov 2026 mocks.
- 70 marks of descriptive questions.
- 15 minutes of advance reading time from 1.45 PM (ICAI exam notification, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
ICAI's section-wise weightage for each paper is in our CA Final syllabus and paper weightage post.
How ICAI passes you in Group I
From ICAI's FAQs on the Final examination (Q 4.10, PDF) (opens in a new tab): you pass a group if, at one sitting, you get at least 40% in each paper of the group and at least 50% in the aggregate of all its papers. The two groups can be passed in different sittings.
For Group I, that is at least 40 in each of FR, AFM and Audit, and 150 out of 300 in total. A strong FR can carry a weaker AFM in the aggregate, but it can't lift AFM above 40. So your mocks need to show that no paper is below the line.
Scoring 60% or more in a paper while failing the group can earn you an exemption in that paper (FAQs, Q 4.11, PDF (opens in a new tab)); see CA Final exemption rules.
When to write your Group I mocks
- Write your first mock of a paper after one full reading of it. It is a diagnosis, not a test of readiness.
- Leave a day after each mock to fix it. Go through every mark cut and rewrite the questions you lost marks on.
- Rotate the papers, FR, AFM, Audit, so none goes weeks without a full sitting.
- Keep the last round for speed, on questions you haven't seen.
- Write at 2 PM, in one sitting, by hand, closed book.
- No full mocks on the days between papers. ICAI's paper-wise dates are in the Guidance Notes; use the gap days for revision.
A day-by-day version is in our CA Final last 30 days mock test plan, and time-splitting inside the paper in how to attempt a CA Final paper in 3 hours.
What changes from paper to paper
ICAI's skill-wise weightage (PDF) (opens in a new tab) shows how differently the three papers test you:
| Paper | Knowledge | Analysis and application | Evaluation and synthesis |
|---|
| FR | 5%–15% | 55%–80% | 15%–30% |
| AFM | 10%–20% | 20%–40% | 50%–60% |
| Audit | 10%–20% | 65%–75% | 10%–20% |
- FR is format and presentation: the right statement, notes to accounts and numbered working notes.
- AFM is the most evaluation-heavy: half or more of it asks you to compare, decide and recommend.
- Audit is applying the right standard to the facts, then concluding.
Common Group I mistakes, from ICAI's examiners
ICAI's own words, from the examiners' comments published with its suggested answers.
FR. Many examinees were "failing to follow the formats prescribed under Division II of Schedule III to the Companies Act, 2013, omitting Notes to Accounts and preparing incomplete or inaccurate working notes" (Final Group I suggested answers, PDF (opens in a new tab)). On a consolidation question, "A significant number of examinees failed to present proper working notes and notes to accounts along with the consolidated balance sheet" (Final Group I examiners' comments, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
AFM. The majority "failed to apply the prescribed H-Model for valuation. Instead, many examinees incorrectly used the Dividend Discount Model (DDM)" (suggested answers, PDF (opens in a new tab)). And "A few students also failed to round off figures to two decimal places, as required" (examiners' comments, PDF (opens in a new tab)). Use the method the question names, and its rounding.
Audit. On the reliability of audit evidence, "many examinees incorrectly answered with reference to SA 620 instead of SA 500, resulting in irrelevant and incorrect answer" (suggested answers, PDF (opens in a new tab)). On an NBFC question, "Many responses were theoretical and lacked application to the facts of the case" (same PDF).
More are in ICAI examiners' comments: common mistakes, with paper guides for FR mock tests and Audit mock tests.
In our Group I mocks you write by hand, upload one PDF, and get your copy back within 24 hours with ICAI-style step-wise marks and a reason for every mark cut, so you catch these mistakes before the exam does.
Frequently asked questions
Which papers are in CA Final Group 1?
Paper 1 Financial Reporting, Paper 2 Advanced Financial Management, and Paper 3 Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics, each 100 marks in 3 hours (ICAI Guidance Notes, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
What marks do I need to pass CA Final Group I?
At least 40% in each paper and 50% in the group aggregate, at one sitting (ICAI FAQs, Q 4.10, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
Should I also solve ICAI's MTPs and RTPs?
Yes, they are free and official. They're linked on our CA Final free resources page; ICAI RTP and MTP explained covers what each is for.
Is a Group I mock test open book?
No. In ICAI's Guidance Notes, the open-book arrangement is described only for Paper 6 in Group II, so write FR, AFM and Audit mocks without books or notes.
