CA Inter RTP Jan 2027 PDF with answers: all 6 papers

· 13 min read

The CA Inter RTP for January 2027 is out on ICAI's Board of Studies portal, boslive.icai.org, with answers for all six papers: one PDF per paper, each printing the questions and ICAI's suggested answers. The cut-off moves to 30 June 2026 for Income-tax, GST and the company law amendments, four months later than the September 2026 RTP's 28 February 2026. Every paper link below goes straight to ICAI's own PDF.

Your Group I papers start on 2 January 2027, so you have about nine weeks. Below: the paper-wise links, what changed from the September 2026 RTP, what each paper's RTP tests, three questions worked to ICAI's answers, and where the RTP fits around ICAI's MTPs.

Law: the two new CSR notifications

The Paper 2 RTP says the July 2024 edition of the study material (reprint August 2025 and onwards) applies, updated to 31 July 2025. On top of it, it lists six company law notifications. Four were already in the September 2026 RTP: the new small company limits (G.S.R. 880(E), paid-up capital up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore, against ₹4 crore and ₹40 crore before), the Companies (Accounts) Rules changes, the XBRL signed-PDF rule and the electronic Form ADT-4.

The two new ones are both dated 27 May 2026:

  • G.S.R. 415(E): a company may spend on CSR through a zero coupon zero principal instrument issued by a Not for Profit Organisation registered on the Social Stock Exchange, capped at 10% of its total CSR expenditure for the year. The company need not do an impact assessment of a project funded this way.
  • G.S.R. 416(E): Schedule VII gets item (xiii), "Subscription to zero coupon zero principal instruments on Social Stock Exchange".

The full list, with the old law beside each change, is in our CA Inter Law mock test post.

Taxation: one statutory update to read with it

Section A applies the Income-tax law as amended by the Finance Act, 2025, with notifications and circulars up to 30 June 2026, for AY 2026-27. The RTP tells you to read the July 2025 study material with ICAI's statutory update (PDF) (opens in a new tab). The file name still says "sep2026", but the file now opens "Statutory update for January 2027 examination" and covers three items: the salary limit for a "specified employee" and the income limit for exempt medical expenditure abroad (Notification 133/2025), the Unified Pension Scheme, and Circular 9/2025 on higher TDS/TCS after PAN–Aadhaar linking.

Section B: GST law as amended by the Finance Act, 2025, effective up to 30 June 2026. The RTP warns that GST rates in its questions are hypothetical. What each change means for your answers is in CA Inter tax amendments for Jan 2027.

Accounts: three announcements before the questions

The Paper 1 RTP opens with:

  1. Revised criteria for non-company entities (from accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2024): an MSME has turnover up to ₹250 crore and borrowings up to ₹50 crore, among other tests. AS 3, AS 17, AS 20 and AS 24 don't apply to any MSME.
  2. Amendments to AS 22 for the OECD Pillar Two rules: paragraphs 2A and 32A to 32D, with effective-date paragraph 35. Deferred tax relating to Pillar Two income taxes is neither recognised nor disclosed.
  3. G.S.R. 880(E): the same small company limits as in Law.

What each CA Inter RTP Jan 2027 paper tests

Every RTP follows the exam's split: MCQs first (many built on a case scenario), then descriptive questions grouped by chapter.

Paper 1: Advanced Accounting

  • MCQs (Q1 to Q4): a consolidation case on AS 21, 23 and 27 (which investee is an associate; a 25% holding held only for resale within 6 months), an AS 10 revaluation, AS 11 non-integral foreign operations and a speculative forward contract.
  • Descriptive (Q5 to Q20): one question per standard (Framework, AS 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 19, 28, 29), then buy-back, branch accounts, amalgamation and consolidated financial statements.

Paper 2: Corporate and Other Laws

  • MCQs (Q1 to Q10): nine MCQs on one company's case (objects clause, private placement, auditor appointment, AGM notice, proxies, electronic books, dividend, fraud reporting by the auditor), then one assertion-reason MCQ on LLP partner liability.
  • Descriptive (Q11 to Q20): casual vacancy of the auditor, deposits, dividend, register of members, a partner leaving an LLP, then the General Clauses Act, interpretation of statutes and FEMA.

Paper 3: Taxation

  • Income-tax: a case on a ship's crew member (residential status, capital gains, salary, total income and tax, Q1 to Q5), then the residential status and gross total income of a couple working abroad, salary under the default regime, set-off and carry forward with clubbing, a tax consultant's income, TDS/TCS on an LRS remittance and on scrap, and revising a return (Q6 to Q10).
  • GST: a case on one company's divisions, from tour packages to flat rentals (place of supply, exemptions, value of supply, Q1 to Q5), then net GST payable in cash, the simplified registration under rule 14A, TDS on a works contract, place of supply, and the QRMP scheme (Q6 to Q10).

Paper 4: Cost and Management Accounting

  • MCQs (Q1 to Q7): a five-part customer profitability case, then process costing, incentive wages, integrated cost accounts, joint products (groundnut oil and cake), service-department overheads and break-even with the P/V ratio.
  • Descriptive (Q8 to Q18): material (EOQ, re-order levels), employee cost, overhead absorption, cost sheet, cost accounting systems, joint and by-products, service costing (a bus), standard costing, marginal costing, budgets, and a last question on budgetary control with an activity-based costing sum.

Paper 5: Auditing and Ethics

  • MCQs (Q1 to Q8): a case on a listed manufacturer (analytical procedures, inventory at third-party warehouses, litigation, going concern, ethics), then sampling, external confirmations and the components of audit risk.
  • Descriptive (Q9 to Q20): limits of an audit, audit strategy and plan, risk assessment, SA 501 inventory counts, audit documentation, SA 265 significant deficiencies, Emphasis of Matter under SA 706, audit of a society, bank advances, and five threats to independence.

Paper 6: FM and SM

  • FM (6A): an eight-part case on a project-specific discount rate and leverage, two more MCQs, then ratios, cost of capital, capital structure, leverage, dividend, replacement decisions, working capital and receivables.
  • SM (6B): a five-part case on a tech start-up's growth and acquisitions, five more MCQs, then strategic planning, risk, internationalisation, pricing a new product, Mendelow's matrix, turnaround and Ansoff's matrix.

Three RTP Jan 2027 questions, worked to ICAI's answers

These show where marks are won and lost. The figures and answers are ICAI's.

1. FM, Q1(ii) to (vi): the firm's WACC is the wrong rate. A firm with 40% debt (10% pre-tax, 30% tax) and an equity beta of 1.20 has a WACC of 0.40 × 7% + 0.60 × 14.2% = 11.32%. Its new business has a beta of 1.50, so Ke = 7% + 1.50 × 6% = 16%, and the project's WACC is 0.40 × 7% + 0.60 × 16% = 12.40%. At 11.32% the NPV is +₹2.55 crore. At 12.40% it is –₹2.91 crore, so ICAI's answer is to reject. Discount at the firm's own rate and every later part of the case goes wrong.

2. Taxation, Q10(ii): a late return loses the loss. Ms. Geetha filed her AY 2025-26 return on 28.10.2025, after her due date, with a short-term capital loss of ₹80,000. ICAI's answer: a belated return can't carry the loss forward (section 139(3) read with section 80), so revising the AY 2026-27 return won't help. Had she filed on 28.7.2025, she could revise by 31 December 2026 under section 139(5) and set the loss off against her long-term capital gain.

3. Law, MCQ 9: fraud under ₹1 crore. The auditor suspects the CFO of a ₹75 lakh fraud. ICAI's answer is (c): report to the Audit Committee or the Board, and the company discloses it in the Board's report. Option (a) is the trap: Form ADT-4 to the Central Government isn't required "in every case". It is the form now filed electronically after G.S.R. 359(E), one of this attempt's amendments.
