CA Final FR preparation strategy Nov 2026: 4-week plan
CA Final FR preparation strategy for November 2026, in short: revise the four areas ICAI sets in every paper first (group accounting, financial instruments, Ind AS 115 and Ind AS 101), practise one consolidation by hand every week, and write every answer in ICAI's format with numbered working notes. Then spend the last week on amendments, MCQs and your own error log. FR is Paper 1, on Monday, 2 November 2026, so you have four weeks from today.
FR is the first paper of Group I, so it gets the least last-minute time of any paper. That is why the plan below starts this week, not in the study leave.
CA Final FR preparation strategy on one screen
| Priority | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Group accounting: one full consolidation a week, in Schedule III format | Question 1 (compulsory, 14 marks) was group accounting in every recent paper |
| 2 | Financial instruments (Ind AS 32, 109): amortised cost tables, compound instrument splits | Question 2(a), 10 marks, was this every time |
| 3 | Ind AS 115 and Ind AS 101 | Question 5(a) and 5(b) have followed this shape |
| 4 | The other Ind AS in Section III and IV, one long question each | ICAI's largest weightage ranges sit here |
| 5 | 2025 amendments, MCQs, ethics and technology | Easy marks that are easy to lose |
| Every week | One FR mock or long question set, checked, with an error log | Shows which list you actually lose marks in |
The marks behind priorities 1 to 3, Ind AS by Ind AS from ICAI's last four papers, are in our CA Final FR chapter-wise weightage and ABC analysis. This post is about how to prepare, so it doesn't repeat those tables.
The FR paper you are preparing for
From ICAI's Guidance Notes for Final, November 2026 (PDF) (opens in a new tab), ICAI's exam announcement (PDF) (opens in a new tab) and the May 2026 paper in the Final Group I suggested answers (PDF) (opens in a new tab):
| Financial Reporting (Paper 1) | |
|---|---|
| Date and time | Monday, 2 November 2026, 2 to 5 PM; 15 minutes' reading time from 1:45 PM |
| Part I | 30 marks of case scenario based MCQs; 23 MCQs (16 of 1 mark, 7 of 2 marks) in ICAI's Nov 2026 Mock Test Papers, against 15 of 2 marks in May 2026 |
| Part II | 70 marks: Question 1 compulsory, then any four of the other five, 14 marks each |
| Negative marking | None for wrong MCQ answers |
| Printed on the paper | "Working notes should form part of the answer." |
The full Final pattern is in our CA Final exam pattern guide.
Which Ind AS to prioritise for FR
Start with the sections ICAI weights most, and inside them, the standards ICAI keeps setting. ICAI's section-wise weightage (PDF) (opens in a new tab), issued on 26 October 2023 and applicable "till further changes are made", splits Paper 1 into eight sections:
| Section | Topics | Weightage |
|---|---|---|
| I | General purpose financial statements, Division II of Schedule III; Conceptual Framework; Ind AS 1, 34, 7, 8, 10, 113 | 10%–15% |
| II | Ind AS 115 | 5%–10% |
| III | Ind AS 2, 16, 116, 23, 36, 38, 40, 105, 19, 37 | 15%–25% |
| IV | Ind AS 12, 21; Ind AS 24, 33, 108; Ind AS 20, 102, 41 | 15%–20% |
| V | Financial instruments: Ind AS 32, 109, 107 | 10%–15% |
| VI | Business combinations; consolidated and separate financial statements | 10%–20% |
| VII | Ind AS 101; analysis of financial statements | 5%–10% |
| VIII | Ethics with accounting concepts; technology and accounting | 5%–10% |
ICAI allows "a deviation of maximum ±5%". Its skill-wise weightage (PDF) (opens in a new tab) puts 55%–80% of FR at analysis and application, and only 5%–15% at knowledge. So prepare FR by solving cases, not by reading standards.
Two small sections are easy to drop and costly to lose. Section VIII came up as Question 6(a) in both 2026 attempts (professional and ethical duty in January, cloud computing in May), and Section VII as Question 5(b) in both, on Ind AS 101. Every paper's ranges are in CA Final syllabus and paper weightage.
How to prepare for FR in CA Final: one standard at a time
Use the same four steps for every Ind AS, and finish each step on paper.
- Read the standard's summary in ICAI's study material (November 2024 edition, Reprint August 2025 onwards, per the RTP for November 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)). Write the recognition, measurement and disclosure rule in three lines.
- Solve the study material illustrations without looking. Check against ICAI's solution and mark where your figure went wrong.
- Do the same standard from the RTP, the MTPs and past papers. These are on our CA Final free resources pages. ICAI repeats ideas, not numbers, so a past question is the best practice you can get. The ten question types ICAI set at least twice in its last four FR papers, with where each was set and the trap, are in CA Final FR important questions.
- Write one long question by hand, timed at about 1.8 minutes a mark. Typing or "seeing" a solution doesn't train the format.
For a B-list standard you studied months ago, steps 2 and 3 are enough. For the A list, do all four.
Consolidation: how to practise it
Practise consolidation as a fixed routine, so that on 2 November you only change the numbers. In May 2026 Q1, examiners wrote that many "ignored fair value adjustments and incorrectly considered the book values of assets and liabilities", and some missed "the fair value of previously held interests" (May 2026 suggested answers with examiners' comments, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
Working notes, always in this order:
- Fair value adjustments to the subsidiary's net assets
- Goodwill or capital reserve, including the fair value of any previously held interest
- Non-controlling interest
- Consolidated other equity
- Intra-group eliminations and unrealised profit
A worked mini-example (our own numbers). P already holds 20% of S and buys another 40% for ₹600 lakh, so it now holds 60%. S's net assets are ₹800 lakh at book value and ₹1,000 lakh at fair value. The 20% held earlier is worth ₹250 lakh at the acquisition date. NCI is measured at its share of net assets.
| Working | Right | The book-value mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Net identifiable assets | ₹1,000 lakh (fair value) | ₹800 lakh |
| NCI (40%) | ₹400 lakh | ₹320 lakh |
| Consideration + NCI + previously held interest | 600 + 400 + 250 = ₹1,250 lakh | 600 + 320 + 250 = ₹1,170 lakh |
| Goodwill | ₹250 lakh | ₹370 lakh |
Leave out the previously held interest and goodwill drops to nil (600 + 400 − 1,000). One missed fact moves every figure after it, which is why examiners keep flagging it.
A practice ladder for the four weeks:
| Week | Consolidation practice |
|---|---|
| 1 | One full consolidated balance sheet with notes, untimed, in Schedule III format |
| 2 | One step acquisition or Ind AS 103 question with journal entries, timed at 30–35 minutes |
| 3 | One associate or joint arrangement (Ind AS 28, 111) inside a group question |
| 4 | Rewrite your weakest Question 1 from a mock or past paper, timed |
How to write FR answers for step marks
Step marks come from what the examiner can see: the format, the working notes and one line of reasoning per treatment. These are the patterns ICAI's examiners flagged in May 2026 (PDF (opens in a new tab)) and January 2026 (Group I examiners' comments, PDF (opens in a new tab)), with the fix in your copy:
| What the examiners wrote | What to do in your answer |
|---|---|
| Many failed "to follow the formats prescribed under Division II of Schedule III ... omitting Notes to Accounts" (May 2026 Q1) | Draw the balance sheet headings and note numbers first, then fill in figures |
| Answers lacked "proper working notes and notes to accounts", "often mixing them with the balance sheet" (Jan 2026 Q1) | Keep working notes separate, numbered, and refer to them from the statement |
| "incorrectly debiting the Statement of Profit and Loss instead of Other Equity/Retained Earnings" (May 2026 Q1) | Say where each adjustment goes, in words, before the figure |
| "Examinees omitted passing journal entries or have passed incorrectly" (May 2026 Q2(a)) | Where entries are asked, write them for every date, with narrations, in the right books |
| Some "omitted the explanatory aspects of the question, and focused only on computations" (May 2026 Q6(c)) | Name the Ind AS and give the reason before each computation |
| Many "used a 5-year period instead of the earliest exercise date of 3 years" (May 2026 Q2(a)) | Underline every date and rate in the question before you start |
| On theory, many "had provided vague, incomplete and irrelevant explanations" (May 2026 Q5(c)) | Answer theory in points that use the standard's own terms |
How ICAI marks workings step by step is in step marking in CA exams. The same mistakes across all papers are in ICAI examiners' comments.
Amendments and exclusions for November 2026
From ICAI's RTP for November 2026, Group I (PDF) (opens in a new tab):
- Cut-off: amendments and limited revisions "issued up to 30th April, 2026" apply.
- Applicable: the 7 May 2025 amendment (Ind AS 21, lack of exchangeability) and the 13 August 2025 amendment (Ind AS 1 classification and covenants; Ind AS 7 and 107 supplier finance disclosures; Ind AS 12 Pillar Two).
- Excluded: Ind AS 117, "being an industry specific standard". Limited revisions to other Ind AS made because of it still apply. Also out: Ind AS 29, 106 and 114, Appendix B of Ind AS 16 and Appendices A and B of Ind AS 37.
- AS questions: questions on AS 7, 9, 19 and 22 testing differential treatments with Ind AS may be asked.
The RTP's own questions use these amendments, so do them in week 4. Our method is in how to revise amendments for CA exams. Each amendment, with ICAI's notification number, effective date and a worked RTP example, is in CA Final FR amendments for Nov 2026.
CA Final FR revision strategy: 4 weeks to 2 November
Four weeks, one theme a week, one full mock in each of the first three. This is our suggested FR study plan:
| Week | Revise | Practise |
|---|---|---|
| 5–11 Oct | A list: group accounting, Ind AS 32/109 | Full FR mock 1 from 2 PM, by hand; read the checked copy next day |
| 12–18 Oct | Ind AS 115, 101; fix week 1's errors | FR mock 2; compare reasons for marks lost with mock 1 |
| 19–25 Oct | B list: Ind AS 19, 20, 21, 36, 116, 33 | FR mock 3; one long question per B-list standard |
| 26 Oct–1 Nov | Amendments, C list, ethics and technology | No new full paper; 15 MCQs a day, rewrite your weakest Question 1, read the error log |
Keep an error log: one line per mark lost, tagged by section (I to VIII) and by reason (concept, wrong figure, format, working note, explanation missing). If "format" or "working note" shows up in two mocks running, practise layouts before new Ind AS. How FR fits around AFM and Audit is in our CA Final last 30 days mock test plan.
Where a full FR mock fits
A full FR mock belongs in each of weeks 1 to 3, never in the last week. ICAI's two FR Mock Test Papers were on 9 and 23 September (ICAI MTP announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)); if you haven't written them, they are on our CA Final MTP page. After those, our CA Final FR mock test papers give you more full papers on the same pattern.
Inside the three hours:
- Reading time: read Question 1 first, then choose your four optional questions.
- Question 1 early: a consolidation can't be finished in outline. Give it 30–35 minutes and take the time back from short theory parts.
- MCQs in about 45 minutes, no blanks: there is no negative marking.
- Last 10 minutes: check the OMR sheet and that every part reaches a final figure.
The general clock is in how to attempt a CA Final paper in 3 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How to prepare for FR in CA Final in the last month?
Revise group accounting and financial instruments first, write one checked full mock a week for three weeks, and keep the last week for amendments, MCQs and your error log. Don't start new material in the last week.
Which are the important chapters in CA Final FR for November 2026?
Group accounting, financial instruments, Ind AS 115 and Ind AS 101 came up in all of ICAI's last four papers. The marks per Ind AS are in our FR chapter-wise weightage post.
How many FR mock tests should I write before CA Final?
ICAI has no rule. ICAI's two MTPs plus about three full mocks, each checked and followed up, is a workable number for four weeks. One mock you go through properly teaches more than two you only score.
Is Ind AS 117 applicable for CA Final FR November 2026?
No. ICAI's November 2026 RTP excludes it as an industry-specific standard, though limited revisions to other Ind AS made because of it still apply.
Is consolidation always Question 1 in CA Final FR?
There's no ICAI rule saying so. But Question 1 was a group accounting question in every paper from May 2025 to May 2026, and Section VI carries 10%–20% of the paper.
Practise FR with checked mock tests
A strategy only works if you test it on a full paper. Our CA Final FR mock tests are full-syllabus papers on ICAI's latest pattern: 30% MCQs and 70% descriptive, 100 marks in 3 hours, with every chapter covered across the mocks and every amendment applicable for November 2026 tested. You write by hand and upload one PDF, and your checked copy comes back within 24 hours with ICAI-style step-wise marks, the reason for every mark cut and the correct line to write.
FR opens CA Final Group I, and the same checked format runs across all our CA test series and CA mock tests. You can read preview pages of the first mock before you buy. ICAI's own FR past papers, RTPs and MTPs are on our CA Final free resources page.
