CA Foundation Jan 2027 how to pass: passing marks and plan
To pass CA Foundation Jan 2027, you need at least 40 marks out of 100 in each of the four papers and at least 200 out of 400 in total, in the same attempt. That is ICAI's rule word for word: "a minimum of 40% marks in each paper and a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of all the papers" (ICAI New Scheme FAQs, Q 2.14, PDF (opens in a new tab)). So the way to pass is not to top one paper but to make sure no paper falls below 40, then push the total past 200.
The four papers are on 3, 5, 7 and 9 January 2027 (ICAI schedule, PDF (opens in a new tab)). This guide covers the passing marks with worked examples, ICAI's latest pass percentages, how marks are won and lost in each paper, the maths of negative marking, and what to do in the weeks you have left. For the full paper pattern, see CA Foundation exam pattern and marking.
CA Foundation passing marks: the rule in numbers
40 in each paper, 200 out of 400 in total, at one sitting.
| Marks needed | Out of | |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Accounting | 40 | 100 |
| Paper 2: Business Laws | 40 | 100 |
| Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 100 |
| Paper 4: Business Economics | 40 | 100 |
| Aggregate of all four | 200 | 400 |

CA Foundation passing marks out of 400: three examples
Both conditions must hold at once. Four papers at exactly 40 give you 160, which is 40 short of the aggregate.
| Student | P1 | P2 | P3 | P4 | Total | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 45 | 52 | 48 | 55 | 200 | Pass: every paper 40+, total 200 |
| B | 38 | 70 | 66 | 74 | 248 | Fail: Paper 1 below 40 |
| C | 44 | 48 | 50 | 55 | 197 | Fail: total 3 short of 200 |
Student B shows why one weak paper is the real danger: 248 marks and still a fail. Student C shows that 40 everywhere isn't enough. Your target is a safe 50 in each paper, which gives you a margin in every paper and the aggregate together.
CA Foundation passing marks in each subject
The same 40 applies to every paper, written or MCQ. ICAI's rule names no category: the passing marks are the same for every student. In Papers 3 and 4, the 40 is counted after negative marks are taken off, so 45 right and 20 wrong is 45 − 5 = 40, a bare pass in that paper.
CA Foundation pass percentage: the last three results
About one student in five passed in each of the last two attempts.
| Attempt | Appeared | Passed | Pass % | ICAI source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | 90,217 | 18,124 | 20.09% | Press release, PDF (opens in a new tab) |
| January 2026 | 1,09,694 | 21,099 | 19.23% | Press release, PDF (opens in a new tab) |
| September 2025 | 98,827 | 14,609 | 14.78% | Press release, PDF (opens in a new tab) |
The September 2026 result is not in this table; ICAI declares results on icai.org and caresults.icai.org (opens in a new tab). The low pass rate isn't a sign that Foundation is impossible; it is what the 40-in-every-paper rule does to students who leave one paper weak.
How to pass CA Foundation: a paper-by-paper scoring plan
Papers 1 and 2 reward how you write. Papers 3 and 4 reward accuracy and a clear rule for guessing.
| Paper | Format | Where marks are won |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Accounting | 3 hours, Q1 + any 4 of 5, 20 marks each | Formats, entries, working notes, step marks |
| 2. Business Laws | 3 hours, Q1 + any 4 of 5, 20 marks each | Provision, application to the facts, conclusion |
| 3. Quantitative Aptitude | 2 hours, 100 MCQs | Accuracy; guessing only with a rule |
| 4. Business Economics | 2 hours, 100 MCQs | SM definitions word for word; numericals |
Paper 1 Accounting: show every step
Accounting is a written paper, so it is marked step by step. A correct format, correct entries and labelled working notes earn marks even when your final figure is wrong. ICAI's cover says, "Working notes should form part of the answers" (Paper 1, September 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
- Budget 36 minutes a question. You write 5 questions of 20 marks in 180 minutes. Use the 15-minute reading time (1:45 to 2 PM) to pick your four from Questions 2 to 6.
- Put working notes under the answer, numbered, not on the rough-work page. In May 2026, ICAI's examiners wrote that "Some examinees were unable to provide the necessary working notes" (Foundation suggested answers, May 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
- Answer every part of a theory question. In the same volume, many students "only defined the Trial Balance" and "did not address the second part of the question".
- Write a reason with every True/False. Question 1(a) is six statements at 2 marks each; the reason carries the marks.
- Revise where the marks sit. Company accounts and partnership together took 49 of the 120 marks printed in each of the last three papers (January, May and September 2026, our count). Chapter counts are in CA Foundation Jan 2027 chapter wise weightage.

Paper 2 Business Laws: provision, facts, conclusion
Nearly half the printed marks are short cases (56 of 120 in September 2026): facts are given, and you decide. Every case answer needs three parts:
- The provision, with the Act and section number.
- Application to the facts, in your own words: "In the given case, …".
- A clear conclusion that answers exactly what was asked.
ICAI's examiners flagged the opposite in May 2026: "generalized answers instead of analysing the facts in the light of the relevant legal provisions" (Q1(a), same volume, PDF (opens in a new tab)). A bare "yes" leaves two of the three parts empty. More on how written answers are marked is in step marking in CA exams. Practise on our CA Foundation Business Laws page.
Papers 3 and 4: 100 MCQs in 2 hours
That is 72 seconds a question, with no reading time. Work in two passes: answer everything you are sure of first, then return to the rest. Keep the last 10 minutes to check that every answer sits against the right question number.
- Quantitative Aptitude: ICAI's syllabus fixes the split: Business Mathematics 40 marks, Logical Reasoning 20, Statistics 40 (syllabus, PDF (opens in a new tab)). The 20 reasoning marks come from four fixed question types (series and coding, directions, seating, blood relations), so they reward drill. Practise on our CA Foundation Quantitative Aptitude page.
- Business Economics: most questions in recent papers were one-line recall in study-material wording (about 70% by our count), so read the SM itself, not only notes. Practise on our CA Foundation Business Economics page.
CA Foundation negative marking: when to guess
Negative marking applies only in Papers 3 and 4: +1 for a right answer, −1/4 for a wrong one, 0 for a blank. Marking more than one option counts as wrong (Paper 3, September 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
With four options and one right answer, the average gain from a guess depends on how many options you can rule out:
| You can rule out | Chance of being right | Average gain per guess |
|---|---|---|
| None (blind guess) | 1 in 4 | +0.06 mark |
| One option | 1 in 3 | +0.17 mark |
| Two options | 1 in 2 | +0.375 mark |
Our rule: guess whenever you can rule out at least one option. A blind guess is close to break-even, so leave it blank unless time is up. The real risk isn't guessing; it is the near-miss options ICAI writes on purpose (a wrong sign, M1 instead of M3, the median offered beside the mode), which catch answers you thought were sure.
A worked mini-example
You have finished your first pass of Paper 3:
- 60 answers you are sure of: 55 right, 5 wrong → 55 − 1.25 = 53.75.
- 25 where you ruled out two options: guessing, you get about half: 12 right, 13 wrong → 12 − 3.25 = +8.75, taking you to 62.5.
- 15 you have no idea about: a blind guess might give 4 right, 11 wrong → 4 − 2.75 = +1.25, or it might give 2 right, 13 wrong → 2 − 3.25 = −1.25.
The 25 half-known questions added nearly 9 marks. The 15 blind ones could go either way. Fix your rule before the exam, and practise it in every mock.
How to prepare for CA Foundation Jan 2027: a 12-week plan
From mid-October you have about 12 weeks: one full revision, then full papers under exam timings.
| Weeks | Dates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1–6 | 12 Oct to 22 Nov | First full revision of all four papers, heaviest chapters first. A timed set of 25 MCQs daily for Papers 3 and 4. Fill in the exam form (3 to 16 November without late fee). |
| 7–8 | 23 Nov to 6 Dec | First full mock of each paper; check each copy and start an error log. |
| 9–10 | 7 to 19 Dec | Second revision of the heaviest chapters, then the second mock of each paper; also ICAI's January 2027 RTP and MTPs (dates below). |
| 11–12 | 20 Dec to 2 Jan | Last mock of each paper, at 2 PM, in exam order; then only formats, provisions and your error log. |
Exam form dates are from ICAI's January 2027 schedule (PDF) (opens in a new tab). ICAI's January 2027 Foundation MTPs run Series I from 1 to 9 December and Series II from 14 to 21 December 2026 (ICAI notice, PDF (opens in a new tab)); paper-wise dates are in CA Inter and Foundation MTP Jan 2027 schedule. The study material that applies is the August 2024 edition (Reprint August 2025 onwards), plus the RTP for January 2027 for Papers 1 and 2 (ICAI notice, PDF (opens in a new tab)).

Why mocks decide the result
Revision tells you what you know. A timed paper tells you where you lose marks: a missing working note, a 72-second MCQ that took three minutes, a law answer with no conclusion. Write each mock in the real time limit: 3 hours for Papers 1 and 2, 2 hours for Papers 3 and 4, by hand, in one sitting. Then check it line by line and add every lost mark to your error log.
When to write each mock, and how to use the checked copy, is in CA Foundation Jan 2027 mock test plan.
