CA Inter chapter wise weightage Jan 2027: all 6 papers
Quick answer: CA Inter chapter wise weightage, counted from ICAI's last four papers (September 2025, January 2026, May 2026 and September 2026), puts the same few chapters on top every time. Advanced Accounting: amalgamation (14–18 marks printed per paper) and consolidation (10–14). Law: FEMA (14 every paper), LLP (12–14) and the General Clauses Act (12–14). Taxation: the compulsory 15-mark income-tax computation and the GST liability computation (10–17). Costing: marginal costing, cost sheets (7–16 each) and overheads (9–13). Audit: audit evidence (11–20), ethics (10–16) and completion and review (9–21). FM and SM: working capital (9–11) and every SM chapter (9–14). Revise these first. Group I starts on 2 January 2027 and Group II on 8 January.
ICAI publishes CA Inter weightage only by section, as a percentage range. It doesn't publish chapter-wise marks. So we went through ICAI's four most recent papers in all six subjects, question by question, tagged each question to the chapter it tested, and set ICAI's ranges beside the result. Every paper is linked below, so you can check any line yourself.
How we counted CA Inter chapter wise weightage
Every CA Inter paper is marked out of 100, but ICAI prints more marks than that because some questions are optional:
- Papers 1, 2, 4 and 5: 15 MCQs of 2 marks (30 marks), then six descriptive questions of 14 marks. Question 1 is compulsory and you answer any four of the other five. So 114 marks are printed for the 100 you write.
- Papers 3 and 6: two sections of 50 marks. Each has 15 marks of MCQs, a compulsory 15-mark question and any two of three 10-mark questions. So 60 marks are printed per section, 120 per paper.
The tables below count printed marks: every MCQ and every descriptive question, optional or not. Where a part had an OR, we counted the first option printed. So "14 marks" means 14 marks on the paper, not 14 marks you were forced to write.
Our sources are ICAI's own files:
For September 2026 we worked from the question papers (opens in a new tab) alone; ICAI has since published its September 2026 suggested answers (opens in a new tab) on icai.org. ICAI's answers for May 2026 and the three attempts before it, all six papers with the tax law each one uses, are in CA Inter suggested answers May 2026 PDF.
Tagging a question to a chapter is our own reading. Some questions mix two chapters, and someone else could move a few of them and shift a chapter by 2–5 marks. Where that would change a priority, we say so.
How we set A, B and C:
- A: asked in all four papers and 8 or more printed marks a paper on average. Revise first and practise in full.
- B: asked in at least three of the four papers, or 4 or more marks a paper on average. One full question each, then a second.
- C: the rest. Short notes and the RTP's questions.
This is our priority order, not an ICAI list. ICAI's section ranges come from its section-wise weightage for the Intermediate course (PDF) (opens in a new tab), issued on 26 October 2023 and applicable from May 2024 "till further changes are made", with a permitted deviation of up to ±5%. ICAI doesn't say whether its percentages are of the 100 marks you write or the marks printed, so treat our comparison as a guide.
CA Inter Advanced Accounting chapter wise weightage (Paper 1)
| Chapter | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amalgamation (AS 14) | 14 | 16 | 16 | 18 | A |
| Consolidated financial statements (AS 21) | 14 | 14 | 10 | 14 | A |
| Cash flow statements (AS 3) | 7 | 8 | 8 | 12 | A |
| Internal reconstruction | 4 | 14 | 10 | 4 | A |
| Company final accounts (Schedule III) | 14 | – | 14 | 10 | B |
| PPE and borrowing costs (AS 10, AS 16) | 4 | 7 | 9 | 7 | B |
| Buy-back of securities | 8 | 7 | 4 | 6 | B |
| Branch accounts | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | B |
| Grants, intangibles, impairment (AS 12, 26, 28) | 13 | – | 2 | 6 | B |
| Employee benefits (AS 15) | 2 | 4 | 5 | 4 | B |
| Taxes on income, interim reporting (AS 22, 25) | 5 | 4 | 6 | – | B |
| Inventories (AS 2) | 5 | 2 | 2 | 2 | B |
| Earnings per share (AS 20) | – | 5 | 2 | 4 | B |
| Investments (AS 13) | – | 7 | 2 | 2 | B |
| Dividend out of reserves | 2 | 4 | – | 2 | B |
| Other AS (4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 29) and the Framework | 16 | 16 | 18 | 17 | C, each on its own |
| Total printed | 114 | 114 | 114 | 114 |
What stands out:
- Amalgamation has been a full 14-mark question every time, and consolidation (AS 21) has been Question 5 every time. Together they took 26–32 of the 114 printed marks in every paper, about a quarter.
- Question 6(c) has been branch accounts for 6 marks in all four papers, and branch accounts came up nowhere else.
- Question 1 is always three AS questions for 14 marks, but the AS change every attempt: AS 22, 2 and 9; then AS 16, 15 and 20; then AS 15, 10 and 25; then AS 10 with AS 16, AS 19 and AS 20. That's why the "other AS" row is large but each AS in it is C: each carried few marks on its own, and even AS 11, the one that came up in three of the four papers, was an MCQ or one part of a question each time.
Internal reconstruction sits exactly on our A line (8.0 a paper). It gets there only because we read a May 2026 MCQ on goodwill left after a reconstruction as reconstruction; read it another way and it falls to B.
ICAI's sections: Section I (the AS and the Framework) 55%–65%, Section II (company accounts, buy-back and reconstruction) 30%–35%, Section III (branches) 5%–10%. ICAI lists cash flow statements in both sections: AS 3 under Section I and "Cash Flow Statement" under company accounts in Section II. Counting them under Section II, the four papers printed 72–75 marks for Section I, 33–36 for Section II and 6 for Section III, all within ICAI's ranges as a share of the 114 printed marks, once the ±5% is allowed. Practise these on our CA Inter Advanced Accounting page. Which Accounting Standard came in which question in ICAI's last three papers, with a worked AS 25 question from May 2026, is in our CA Inter Advanced Accounting mock test guide for Jan 2027.
CA Inter Law chapter wise weightage (Paper 2)
| Chapter | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FEMA, 1999 | 14 | 14 | 14 | 14 | A |
| LLP Act, 2008 | 12 | 14 | 14 | 14 | A |
| General Clauses Act, 1897 | 14 | 12 | 12 | 12 | A |
| Accounts of companies | 10 | 10 | 11 | 10 | A |
| Share capital and debentures | 12 | 7 | 5 | 13 | A |
| Interpretation of statutes | 8 | 8 | 8 | 8 | A |
| Management and administration | 17 | 7 | 9 | – | B |
| Acceptance of deposits | 7 | 7 | 9 | 7 | B |
| Prospectus and allotment of securities | 7 | 7 | 5 | 5 | B |
| Registration of charges | – | 7 | 5 | 10 | B |
| Audit and auditors | 5 | 6 | 5 | 5 | B |
| Companies incorporated outside India | 6 | 5 | 5 | 5 | B |
| Declaration and payment of dividend | – | 5 | 7 | 6 | B |
| Incorporation of company | 2 | 5 | 5 | 5 | B |
| Preliminary | – | – | – | – | C |
| Total printed | 114 | 114 | 114 | 114 |
What stands out:
- The other laws sit in fixed slots. In all four papers, part (c) of every descriptive question was an other-law question: Q1(c) and Q6(c) FEMA, Q2(c) and Q5(c) the General Clauses Act, Q3(c) and Q4(c) interpretation of statutes. With their MCQs, the other laws took 34–36 printed marks in every paper.
- Q4(b) and Q5(b) were LLP questions every time, plus one or two LLP MCQs.
- Accounts of companies is the steadiest of the bigger Companies Act chapters: 10–11 marks in every paper. Management and administration swings the most, from 17 marks to as little as none.
Three close calls could change a priority:
- CSR and the internal auditor (Sections 135 and 138) sit in the Companies Act's chapter on accounts, so we counted them there. If they belonged elsewhere, accounts of companies would drop to B.
- A September 2026 MCQ on declaring a beneficial interest in shares (Section 89) sat in a dividend case, so we counted it under dividend. Under management and administration, that chapter would have come up in all four papers (17, 7, 9 and 2 marks) and would be A.
- A May 2026 MCQ on declaring a dividend after a deposit default sat in the deposits case. Counted under deposits, that chapter would average exactly 8 and be A.
ICAI's sections: for Part I (Company law and LLP, 70 marks): Section I (chapters 1–4) 20%–30%, Section II (chapters 5–7) 20%–30%, Section III (chapters 8–11) 30%–35%, Section IV (LLP) 15%–20%. For Part II (other laws, 30 marks): the General Clauses Act 35%–40%, interpretation of statutes 25%–30% and FEMA 30%–40%. Interpretation of statutes has had only 8 of the 34–36 printed other-law marks each time, a little below its range, and FEMA (14) has been a little above its range in three of the four papers. Practise on our CA Inter Law page.
CA Inter Taxation chapter wise weightage (Paper 3: income tax and GST)
Section A, Income-tax (60 marks printed a paper):
| Chapter | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computation of total income and tax (Q1, plus one MCQ in Jan 26) | 15 | 17 | 15 | 15 | A |
| Advance tax, TDS and TCS | 10 | 8 | 8 | 6 | A |
| Set-off and carry forward of losses | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | B |
| Salaries | 4 | 6 | 6 | 6 | B |
| Residential status and scope of total income | 7 | 2 | 6 | 6 | B |
| Capital gains | 6 | 2 | 5 | 8 | B |
| Return of income | – | 4 | 4 | 6 | B |
| Income from other sources | 2 | 6 | 4 | 1 | B |
| House property | 4 | 2 | – | 4 | B |
| Clubbing of income | 4 | – | 4 | 2 | B |
| Basic concepts | – | 6 | – | – | C |
| Deductions | 2 | – | 2 | – | C |
| Business income outside Q1 | – | 1 | – | – | C |
| Total printed | 60 | 60 | 60 | 60 |
Section B, GST (60 marks printed a paper):
| Chapter | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computation of GST liability | 17 | 10 | 10 | 10 | A |
| Invoice, credit and debit notes, e-way bill | 7 | 7 | 7 | 8 | B |
| Payment of tax, TDS and TCS under GST | 7 | 7 | 13 | 2 | B |
| Place and time of supply | 7 | 5 | 7 | 9 | B |
| Input tax credit | 7 | 6 | 7 | 5 | B |
| Registration | 7 | 3 | 2 | 7 | B |
| Returns, accounts and records | 5 | 4 | 5 | 4 | B |
| Supply, charge and composition | 1 | 5 | 9 | 2 | B |
| Exemptions | 2 | 7 | – | 5 | B |
| Value of supply | – | 5 | – | 5 | C |
| GST introduction and constitutional aspects | – | 2 | – | 3 | C |
| Total printed | 60 | 61 | 60 | 60 |
January 2026 adds up to 61 because ICAI's answers print 2 marks against all eight GST MCQs. We've kept ICAI's figures.
One close call changes a priority: two 5-mark questions on the Rule 86B limit on paying tax from the credit ledger (September 2025 Q8(a) and May 2026 Q5(b)) are counted under payment of tax. Counted under input tax credit, ITC would average 8.75 a paper and be A.
What stands out:
- Q1 has always been a full computation of total income and tax for 15 marks. In September 2025, January 2026 and May 2026 it was built mostly on business income adjustments and asked for tax under both regimes. In September 2026 it mixed several heads under the default regime. So business income matters far more than its row suggests: it lives inside Q1.
- Some slots never moved. Q2(b) was a 4-mark TDS or TCS question, Q4(a) a 6-mark set-off computation and Q3 a salaries question in all four papers. In GST, Q5(a) was a 10-mark "net GST payable in cash" computation every time. Every slot, paper by paper, is in CA Inter taxation important questions for Jan 2027.
- Input tax credit came up in every paper (5–7 marks), as did registration and invoices.
ICAI's sections: Income-tax: Section I (basic concepts and residence) 10%–20%, II (heads of income) 25%–30%, III (clubbing, set-off, deductions) 15%–20%, IV (advance tax, TDS, TCS and returns) 15%–20%, V (computation under the alternative regimes) 20%–25%. GST: Section I (introduction) 0–5%, II (levy, supply, exemptions, place, time and value of supply, input tax credit and computation) 50%–80%, III (registration, invoices, e-way bill, accounts, payment and returns) 20%–45%. With Q1 counted under Section V, every paper sat within these ranges as a share of the 60 printed marks per section, once the ±5% is allowed.
The law for January 2027: the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies to Inter Paper 3A only from May 2027 onwards (ICAI announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)). January 2027 is still on the Income-tax Act, 1961. Use the July 2025 study material with the RTP and Statutory Update for January 2027, as ICAI's study material notice (PDF) (opens in a new tab) lists. Practise on our CA Inter Taxation page.
CA Inter Costing chapter wise weightage (Paper 4)
| Chapter | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marginal costing | 16 | 13 | 13 | 7 | A |
| Cost sheet | 15 | 9 | 7 | 16 | A |
| Overheads: absorption costing | 9 | 13 | 10 | 12 | A |
| Budgets and budgetary control | 9 | 5 | 9 | 17 | A |
| Material cost | 13 | 12 | 7 | 6 | A |
| Employee cost | 9 | 11 | 11 | 4 | A |
| Standard costing | 6 | 9 | 11 | 9 | A |
| Service costing | 10 | 14 | 2 | 7 | A |
| Activity based costing | 8 | 4 | 10 | 10 | A |
| Process costing | 2 | 5 | 10 | 7 | B |
| Cost accounting systems and reconciliation | 5 | 7 | 4 | 7 | B |
| Joint products and by-products | 2 | 5 | 8 | 5 | B |
| Job costing | 5 | 2 | 2 | 7 | B |
| Introduction to cost and management accounting | 5 | 5 | 5 | – | B |
| Unit and batch costing | – | – | 5 | – | C |
| Total printed | 114 | 114 | 114 | 114 |
What stands out:
- Costing spreads its marks. Nine chapters averaged 8 or more marks a paper, and 13 of the 15 came up in all four papers. There is no safe chapter to leave out.
- The two 10-mark MCQ cases change chapter every time: cost sheet and marginal costing in September 2025, marginal costing and material (EOQ) in January 2026, process costing and overheads in May 2026, activity based costing and budgets in September 2026.
- Reconciliation of cost and financial profit came up in three papers in a row (January 2026, May 2026 and September 2026), and Q6 was 5 + 5 + 4 marks of theory every time.
Activity based costing sits exactly on our A line (8.0 a paper) and would fall to B if September 2026's MCQ case were read as marginal costing.
ICAI's sections: Section I (introduction and cost sheets) 10%–15%, II (material, employee, overheads, ABC and cost accounting systems) 35%–40%, III (methods of costing) 20%–25%, IV (standard costing, marginal costing and budgets) 25%–30%. The four papers printed 12–20, 39–47, 19–27 and 27–33 marks for them, within the ranges as a share of the 114 printed marks, once the ±5% is allowed. Practise on our CA Inter Costing page. The question types inside these chapters, and the six ICAI repeated, are in CA Inter costing important questions for Jan 2027.
CA Inter Audit chapter wise weightage (Paper 5)
| Chapter (ICAI study material) | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4. Audit evidence | 20 | 11 | 18 | 16 | A |
| 11. Ethics and terms of audit engagements | 10 | 15 | 14 | 16 | A |
| 5. Audit of items of financial statements | 12 | 11 | 19 | 11 | A |
| 7. Completion and review | 9 | 21 | 10 | 13 | A |
| 3. Risk assessment and internal control | 13 | 4 | 12 | 14 | A |
| 8. Audit report | 10 | 9 | 12 | 9 | A |
| 2. Audit strategy, planning and programme | 12 | 9 | 9 | 6 | A |
| 9. Special features of audit of different types of entities | 9 | 13 | 4 | 9 | A |
| 10. Audit of banks | 8 | 7 | 6 | 7 | B |
| 1. Nature, objective and scope of audit | 6 | 7 | 6 | 8 | B |
| 6. Audit documentation | 5 | 7 | 4 | 5 | B |
| Total printed | 114 | 114 | 114 | 114 |
What stands out:
- All 11 chapters came up in all four papers. Audit has no C list: what differs is how much each chapter carries.
- Ethics took 14–16 printed marks in three of the four papers, more than its 8%–10% section range. Question 6(c) was the only OR in every paper.
- Audit evidence was the largest chapter on average (16 a paper) and never fell below 11 marks.
The closest A calls are special features of different entities (8.75 a paper) and audit strategy and planning (9.0). Audit strategy would drop to B if September 2025's Q1(a) on an audit programme were read as audit evidence.
ICAI's sections: chapter 1 4%–6%; chapters 2, 3, 7 and 8 8%–12% each; chapters 4 and 6 together 12%–18%; chapter 5 12%–20%; chapters 9 and 10 together 12%–18%; chapter 11 8%–10%. Practise on our CA Inter Audit page.
CA Inter FM SM chapter wise weightage (Paper 6)

| Investment decisions (capital budgeting) | 7 | 5 | 8 | 14 | A |
| Ratio analysis | 6 | 15 | 5 | 8 | A |
| Cost of capital | 8 | 8 | 9 | 7 | A |

| Total printed | 60 | 60 | 60 | 60 |
Section B, Strategic Management (60 marks printed a paper):
| Chapter | Sep 25 | Jan 26 | May 26 | Sep 26 | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strategic analysis: external environment | 14 | 14 | 12 | 12 | A |
| Strategic analysis: internal environment | 12 | 13† | 14 | 12 | A |

| Total printed | 60 | 60 | 60 | 60 |
† ICAI's January 2026 answers don't print a mark against each MCQ. In the other three papers, seven MCQs per section carried 2 marks and the last one (Q8 and Q16) 1 mark, so we've used that split. If ICAI made a different MCQ the 1-mark one, a January 2026 cell could be 1 mark off, most likely the two marked †.
What stands out:
- SM spreads evenly. Every chapter took 9–14 printed marks in every paper, so all five are A. Introduction was exactly 9 every time. We placed each SM topic where ICAI's study material covers it: Porter's five forces, value chain and product characteristics in Chapter 2; strategic group mapping, channels and SWOT in Chapter 3; strategic uncertainty in Chapter 5. Some of these look like they belong elsewhere, so a different reading can move 5 marks between Chapters 2 and 3, but every chapter stays A.
- In FM, scope was exactly 2 marks and types of financing exactly 4 in all four papers, both as theory in Q4. Small, but nearly certain.
- Working capital is the steadiest big FM chapter (9–11 marks). Capital structure and dividend decisions each missed one paper entirely.
Ratio analysis is A partly because of an 8-mark question in January 2026 on external funds required, which we read as financial planning. Read it another way and ratios fall to B. Cost of capital sits exactly on the A line.
ICAI's sections: FM Section I (scope and financial analysis) 10%–15%, II (financing decisions and cost of capital) 45%–50%, III (investment and dividend decisions) 20%–25%, IV (working capital) 15%–20%. SM has five sections, one per chapter, at 15%–25% each. Practise on our CA Inter FM and SM page.
CA Inter ABC analysis for Jan 2027: the A list in one table

|---|---|
| 1. Advanced Accounting | Amalgamation, consolidation (AS 21), cash flow (AS 3), internal reconstruction |
| 2. Corporate and Other Laws | FEMA, LLP, General Clauses Act, accounts of companies, share capital and debentures, interpretation of statutes |
| 3. Taxation | Q1 computation of total income and tax, advance tax/TDS/TCS, GST liability computation |

| 6. FM and SM | Working capital, investment decisions, ratios, cost of capital; all five SM chapters |
B and C don't mean skip. A chapter that came up in only one paper can come up in yours, and many C items came up only as MCQs or short parts that one careful reading of the study material covers. ICAI's own questions for each are in its RTPs and past papers, linked on our CA Inter RTP and CA Inter past year question papers pages.
How to use this weightage before 2 January
- Now to mid-November: finish the A list of every paper you're writing, then the B list. Do the fixed slots first (Accounts Q6(c) branch accounts, Law's other-law (c) parts, Tax Q1 and GST Q5(a)), because each is worth practising in its exact format.
- Second half of November onwards: write full papers. A weightage table tells you where the marks are; a timed paper shows where you lose them. Our CA Inter Jan 2027 mock test plan gives the dates for each round.
- Put chapters on dates: our CA Inter Jan 2027 revision planner lists which chapters to revise on which day, up to the last paper on 12 January.
How each paper is set (MCQ cases, where the OR sits, time per question) is in CA Inter exam pattern Jan 2027. ICAI marks descriptive answers step by step, as explained in step marking in CA exams. The editions and amendments to study from are in CA Inter study material Jan 2027. And where students lost marks inside these chapters last time is in ICAI examiner comments for CA Inter May 2026, paper by paper.
Frequently asked questions
Does ICAI publish CA Inter chapter wise weightage?
No. ICAI publishes only a section-wise weightage (PDF) (opens in a new tab), where a section groups several chapters, with a deviation of up to ±5% allowed. Any chapter-wise figure, including ours, is counted from past papers. Ours come from ICAI's own question papers and suggested answers, linked above.
Which chapters are most important in CA Inter for January 2027?
From ICAI's last four papers: amalgamation and consolidation in Accounts; FEMA, LLP and the General Clauses Act in Law; the Q1 income-tax computation and GST liability computation in Tax; marginal costing, cost sheets and overheads in Costing; audit evidence, ethics and completion and review in Audit; and working capital plus every SM chapter in FM and SM. The full A list is in the table above.
Is the CA Inter weightage the same for January 2027 as for September 2026?
Yes. ICAI's weightage document has applied from May 2024 "till further changes are made", and ICAI's Section-wise Weightages page (opens in a new tab) still lists the same document. What changes each attempt is the law cut-off and the amendments, which are in CA exam applicability.
Is the CA Inter ABC analysis the same as ICAI's list?
No. ICAI doesn't publish an ABC list. Ours is built from ICAI's papers with one rule: A if a chapter came up in all four papers with 8 or more printed marks a paper on average, B if it came up in at least three or averaged 4 or more, C otherwise.
Which Income-tax Act applies to CA Inter January 2027?
The Income-tax Act, 1961. ICAI has announced that the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies to Inter Paper 3A from the May 2027 exam onwards (PDF (opens in a new tab)).
Find out which chapters cost you marks
Knowing where the marks are is half the job. The other half is finding where you lose them, and only a checked paper shows that. Our CA Inter test series gives you full-syllabus mock tests in every subject, with brand-new questions on the latest ICAI pattern (30% MCQs and 70% descriptive), every chapter covered across the mocks with more weight on the most-asked, and every amendment applicable for January 2027 tested.
You write by hand and upload one PDF. Your checked copy comes back within 24 hours, with ICAI-style step-wise marks and the reason for every mark cut, including the correct line to write. Pick Group I (Accounts, Law, Tax), Group II (Costing, Audit, FM and SM) or both, and read preview pages of the first mock before you buy. All our CA mock tests are on our CA test series home page, and ICAI's own MTPs, RTPs and past papers are on our CA Inter free resources page.
