CA exam answer sheet: how to write and present answers
On the CA exam answer sheet, start every question on a fresh page with its number at the top, finish all parts of a question before moving on, and write theory as provision, application to the facts, then conclusion. Practical answers go in the prescribed format with numbered working notes. These first rules are not tips: they are printed on ICAI's own answer book.
Quick answer: fresh page per question · question number at the top or in the margin · all parts together · roll number only in its box · MCQs only on the OMR cover in HB pencil · score out blank pages before you submit.
This guide takes the answer book page by page for the November 2026 attempt. ICAI's rules are linked to ICAI; the marks-wise guide and checklist are our suggestions, and we say so.
ICAI's specimen answer book for Sep and Nov 2026
ICAI published specimen copies of answer books for the September and November 2026 exams (opens in a new tab) on 27 July 2026. Open the one for your paper before the exam, so the cover holds no surprises:
| Format | Used for | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| Format 2 (opens in a new tab) | Composite papers (descriptive + MCQ): CA Final Papers 1 to 5 | 28 |
| Format 3 (opens in a new tab) / Format 4 (opens in a new tab) | CA Inter papers with Section A (descriptive + MCQ) and Section B (descriptive) | 20 each |
| Format 5 (opens in a new tab) | CA Final Paper 6 (IBS) and INTT-AT | 28 |
| Format 1 and OMR sheets | Papers without MCQs; Foundation Papers 3 and 4 |
Format 5 groups the MCQ circles by Question 1 to 5 and says: "Please ensure to answer the MCQs relevant to questions as attempted in the descriptive answer book." In IBS, mark MCQs only for the four cases you write. For Inter's Section A and B books, descriptive answers in the wrong book "will be not be valued", in ICAI's words.
CA answer sheet first page: what to fill and what never to write
The cover's general instructions (Format 2, Sep/Nov 2026) say, in short:
- Roll number in figures and words "at the right hand corner of the cover sheet only and nowhere else including additional answer book/s and graph paper", and darken the OMR circles with a black or blue ball pen.
- Fill the examination, group, paper number and subject at the upper left.
- Stick the barcode sticker from the attendance sheet in its box.
- Writing the roll number elsewhere, or marks like "OM", "Sri", "Jesus", "786", "will tantamount to adoption of 'unfair means'".
For MCQs on the cover: "Use Only H.B. Pencil", write and darken the MCQ booklet serial number exactly as printed, darken the full circle, erase completely to change, and no stray marks or rough work on the OMR page. MCQ answers written inside the answer book "will not be evaluated" (Paper 1, May 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
CA answer sheet format: ICAI's rules for the pages inside
The same cover sets the layout of your answers:
- "The answers should be written neatly and legibly."
- "The answer to each question must be commenced on a fresh page and question number prominently written at the top of each answer. Alternatively, the question number should be distinctly written in the margin."
- "The answer to each question in all parts should be fully completed in one page or in a consecutive set of pages, before the next question is taken up."
- "Before submission of the answer book to the invigilator take care to score out (X) blank pages, if any, that you might have left."
What this means for you: write Q2(b)(ii), not just "(ii)", and if you skip a part to come back later, leave space for it inside that question's pages. The question paper adds: "Working notes should form part of the answer" and "Candidates are required to write the question number legibly" (Paper 1, May 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
How to write answers in CA exam: theory and practical
Theory: provision, facts, conclusion
- Provision. The section, SA or standard, briefly.
- Application. Test this question's facts against it, one by one.
- Conclusion. One line that answers the question as asked.
Examiners keep flagging answers that skip the middle block. In May 2026 DT, "A large number of examinees merely repeated the facts given in the question and stated the conclusion without substantiating it with the provisions of section 40(a)(i)" (Final Group II, May 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
Before (weak), May 2026 Audit Q1(a): "No, the representation is not enough. The auditor should ask the lawyer." The examiners noted that many "focused only on the final conclusion without describing the additional audit procedures to be performed" (Final Group I, May 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
After (structured):
Provision. As per SA 580, written representations do not on their own provide sufficient appropriate audit evidence. As per SA 501, where litigation may exist, the auditor shall seek direct communication with the entity's external legal counsel.
Application. A large payment to an IP law firm and Board minutes on a possible patent claim indicate material litigation. Management's refusal to allow contact with the lawyers is a significant concern.
Additional procedures. Inquire of management and in-house counsel; review minutes, legal correspondence and the legal expense account.
Conclusion. The representation is not sufficient. If evidence can't be obtained, modify the opinion as per SA 705.
Practical: format, working notes, assumptions
- Main statement first, then "Working Notes" WN 1, WN 2, referred to in the statement ("as per WN 2").
- Assumptions on their own line: "Assumption: the loan is taken on 1 April."
- Unit in the column heading (₹ in lakhs), rounding only as asked.
- Particulars in full: narrations, dates, share denominations.
How much to write for 2, 4, 6 and 8 marks
ICAI gives no word limits. This table is our guidance, built on time: CA Final Papers 1 to 5 give 3 hours for 100 marks (exam schedule, PDF (opens in a new tab)), so about 1.8 minutes per mark.
| Marks | Time (approx.) | Theory answer | Practical answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 4 min | Provision + one-line conclusion, about half a page | One working, one answer line |
| 4 | 7 min | Provision, 2 to 3 applied points, conclusion; about a page | Statement plus 1 to 2 working notes |
| 6 | 11 min | Provision, 3 to 4 applied points or a short table, conclusion | Full format with working notes and assumptions |
| 8 | 14 min | Headings per issue, each with provision → facts → conclusion | Full statement, all working notes, final answer line |
Match the verb: "state" wants less than "examine" or "advise". Length never earns marks on its own; each applied point does. How marks are split is covered in step marking in CA exams.
Paper-wise answer sheet tips from ICAI's examiners
| Paper | What examiners flagged | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| FR | Many failed "to follow the formats prescribed under Division II of Schedule III to the Companies Act, 2013, omitting Notes to Accounts and preparing incomplete or inaccurate working notes" (May 2026) | Use the Schedule III format with notes; keep working notes separate from the statement |
| AFM | "A few students also failed to round off figures to two decimal places, as required" (Jan 2026) | Round exactly as asked; label every figure |
| Audit | "many examinees incorrectly answered with reference to SA 620 instead of SA 500" (May 2026) | Cite an SA only when sure; otherwise state the principle in words |
| DT | Many "did not substantiate the adjustments made while computing income… with proper reasoning", and many "could not complete the computation of total income and tax liability" (May 2026) | One line of reason per adjustment; always reach total income and tax |
| IDT | "Many examinees also did not substantiate their answers with appropriate legal reasoning" (May 2026) | Name the provision (composite supply, blocked credit, reverse charge) before the figure |
| IBS | Students "preferred to copy the general description" from the study material (May 2026) | Apply each framework element to the case's facts |

|---|---|
| ☐ | Fresh page; full question number at the top or in the margin |
| ☐ | All parts of the question together, in consecutive pages |
| ☐ | Every verb answered ("explain", "compute", "advise") |
| ☐ | Theory: provision → application → conclusion |
| ☐ | Practical: prescribed format, numbered working notes, assumptions |
| ☐ | Unit in headings; rounding as asked |
| ☐ | Section, SA or Ind AS cited only when sure |
| ☐ | MCQs on the OMR cover only, HB pencil, full circles |
| ☐ | Roll number only in its box; no symbols anywhere |

Handwriting: readable beats beautiful. Write slightly larger, underline only the provision and the conclusion, and cross out with one straight line.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to start each answer on a new page in the CA exam?
Yes. ICAI's answer book for Sep/Nov 2026 says "The answer to each question must be commenced on a fresh page", and all parts of a question must be completed in one page or consecutive pages before the next (Format 2, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
How many pages does the CA answer sheet have?
The Sep/Nov 2026 specimens say 28 pages for Format 2 (Final Papers 1 to 5) and Format 5 (Final Paper 6), and 20 pages for each of Inter's Section A and Section B books. The cover has a box for additional answer books used.
How do I practise on a CA answer sheet?
Download ICAI's specimen for your paper, fill in the cover once so it's familiar, and write your mock papers on plain sheets in the same rules: fresh page per question, working notes after the statement. That last part is our suggestion.
Is the CA Inter answer sheet format different?
The general rules are the same. Inter papers with two sections use two books, Section A and Section B, and answers in the wrong book are not valued.
Are working notes compulsory in CA exams?
The papers say "Working notes should form part of the answer", and examiners have flagged working notes that were missing or mixed into the statement (Final Group I comments, January 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
