What is a CA test series? Meaning, types and how it works

· Updated · 14 min read

A CA test series is a set of exam-level question papers that you write under exam conditions, by hand and in the real time, and then get checked, so you find out where your marks go before the actual exam. It is practice with feedback: the paper shows you how you write under pressure, and the checking shows you what to fix. ICAI gives you free practice papers with answers, but a test series is usually run by someone else and its main value is that your copy is checked.

This guide covers the kinds of test series, how they differ from ICAI's MTPs and RTPs, and when to start. Every ICAI fact is linked to its source.

What a CA test series means

Students use "test series", "mock test series" and sometimes just "exam series" for the same thing: a planned set of papers, each one written like the real exam and returned with marks. Three parts make it a test series and not just a pile of questions:

  1. Papers at exam level. The questions match the current ICAI pattern, marks and difficulty for your level and attempt.
  2. Exam conditions. You write by hand, closed book (except where the real exam is open book), in one sitting, in the real time.
  3. Checking. Your answer sheet is marked, with where and why you lost marks.

Take away any one and you lose most of the benefit: a paper nobody checks can't tell you what to fix.

How a CA test series works, step by step

Most written test series run the same loop:

  1. Get the paper. On a fixed date, or when you are ready, depending on the series.
  2. Write it like the exam. By hand, in the full time: 3 hours for most CA papers, 2 hours for Foundation Papers 3 and 4, and 4 hours for Final Paper 6 (January 2027 schedule, PDF (opens in a new tab); November 2026 schedule, PDF (opens in a new tab)).
  3. Submit your answer sheet. Usually a scanned PDF of your handwritten copy, or a physical copy at a centre.
  4. Get it back checked, with marks for each question and comments on your answers.
  5. Read the suggested answers, fix the gaps, and write the next paper.

The loop is the point: the second paper tells you whether you fixed what the first one showed.

The kinds of CA test series

Test series differ in three ways: how much syllabus each paper covers, when you write, and how it is checked.

By syllabus: chapter-wise, unit-wise or full-syllabus

KindWhat each paper coversBest time to use it
Chapter-wiseOne or a few chaptersWhile you are still studying, to close each chapter properly
Unit or part-syllabusAbout a third or half of a subjectAfter a first reading, to join chapters together
Full-syllabusThe whole subject, like the real paperThe last 8 to 10 weeks, to build speed and stamina

Many series combine them: chapter tests first, then a few full-syllabus papers at the end. Close to the exam, only an exam series of full-length papers looks like the real thing.

By timing: scheduled or flexible

  • Scheduled: each paper has a fixed date. This suits students who need a push to keep moving.
  • Flexible: you write each paper when you are ready, within an access period. This suits students whose revision is uneven across subjects, or who are juggling articleship.

By checking: written and checked, or MCQ-only

  • Written and checked: you write descriptive answers by hand and they are checked. This is the only kind that tests presentation, working notes and how you apply a provision to the facts.
  • MCQ-only or online: you answer objective questions on screen and get an instant score. Useful for Foundation Papers 3 and 4, which are fully objective, and for the MCQ part of Intermediate and Final papers. It can't test your descriptive answers.

For CA Final, Papers 1 to 5 have 30 marks of case-based MCQs and 70 marks of descriptive questions, and Paper 6 is a case-study paper with MCQs and descriptive questions in every case (Guidance Notes, Final November 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)). So for Final, an MCQ-only series covers less than a third of what you will be marked on.

How a test series differs from ICAI's MTP and RTP

ICAI's Board of Studies publishes free practice papers for every attempt. They are explained in detail in what is RTP and MTP in CA. In short:

ICAI RTPICAI MTPA written test series
What it isRevision questions with detailed answers, often opening with the amendments for the attemptFull question papers on fixed dates, Series I and IIA set of new papers written by the series provider
CostFreeFreeUsually paid
AnswersIn the same PDFAnswer key within 48 hoursSuggested answers
Who checks your copyYouYouThe series provider

The last row is the main difference. ICAI's November 2026 MTP announcement says: "Students can examine their answers with respect to the Answer Keys and self-assess their performance" (announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)). The RTP says its detailed answers are there "to enable the students to do a self-assessment" (RTP Group I, PDF (opens in a new tab)). For physical MTPs held at ICAI branches, the announcement doesn't say how copies are checked, so ask your branch.

A test series doesn't replace ICAI's papers. Write the MTPs and RTPs anyway: they are ICAI's own, free, and on the current pattern. A test series adds more papers and, more importantly, a checked copy.

What the checking should give you

A test series is only as good as its checking. A total out of 100 is not enough. When you get a checked copy back, it should tell you:

  • Marks for each question, and for each step inside a question, the way ICAI awards step marks. More on this in step marking in CA exams.
  • Why each mark was cut: wrong concept, wrong figure, missing working note, missing format, a provision stated but not applied to the facts.
  • What you should have written instead, so you can fix it in the next paper.
  • Comments on presentation, because ICAI's examiners mark this down every attempt. Their comments are summarised in ICAI examiners' comments: 6 mistakes that cost CA marks.

It should also come back fast. A checked copy that reaches you after you've already written the next paper can't change how you write it.

Who needs a CA test series, and when to start

There is no ICAI rule on this. What follows is practical advice, by level.

CA Final, November 2026

Group I starts on 2 November and Group II on 9 November 2026 (ICAI schedule, PDF (opens in a new tab)). With about four weeks left, chapter tests are too late. Write full-syllabus papers now, a few per subject, each one checked and fixed before the next. Why full papers beat chapter tests now is in CA Final test series chapter wise vs full syllabus, and how many mocks fit, day by day, is in the CA Final 30-day mock test schedule.

If you are choosing a series for this attempt, our checklist is in CA Final test series Nov 2026: how to choose.

CA Intermediate, January 2027

Group I is on 2, 4 and 6 January 2027 and Group II on 8, 10 and 12 January (ICAI announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)). That is about three months away. A sensible order is chapter or unit tests through October and November while you finish the syllabus, then full-syllabus papers in December. When to write each full mock, paper by paper, is dated in our CA Inter Jan 2027 mock test plan. ICAI's LVRC revision classes for CA Inter January 2027 start on 12 October 2026. ICAI's Inter MTPs for January 2027 run Series I from 19 to 30 November and Series II from 3 to 14 December 2026 (ICAI notice, PDF (opens in a new tab)); paper-wise dates are in CA Inter and Foundation MTP Jan 2027 schedule.

CA Foundation, January 2027

Foundation is on 3, 5, 7 and 9 January 2027. Papers 3 and 4 are 2 hours each; Papers 1 and 2 are 3 hours (ICAI announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)). Papers 3 and 4 are 100 MCQs each on an OMR sheet, and a quarter of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer (Paper 3, September 2026, PDF (opens in a new tab)), so timed MCQ practice matters there. Papers 1 and 2 are descriptive, so write those by hand and get them checked. See the CA Foundation exam pattern. Which chapters carry the most marks is in our CA Foundation Jan 2027 chapter-wise weightage, and a dated plan up to 9 January is in our CA Foundation Jan 2027 revision planner.

For CA Intermediate January 2027, our CA Intermediate test series has full-syllabus mocks for both groups, written by hand and checked. Group II is Cost and Management Accounting, Auditing and Ethics, and Financial Management and Strategic Management. If that is the only group you are writing, take the CA Inter Group II mock test series on its own. ICAI's own free papers are on our CA Intermediate and CA Foundation free resources pages. For CA Foundation January 2027, our CA Foundation test series for January 2027 has full-syllabus mocks for all four papers, checked the same way.

You may not need a paid series if...

  • you have a study partner who will check your copies strictly, step by step, against ICAI's suggested answers; and
  • you already have more ICAI papers than you can write in the time left (for CA Final, that is usually true; see free CA Final mock test papers).

If that's you, write ICAI's papers and check them using our guide to checking with ICAI suggested answers.

How our CA test series works

Our CA test series runs full-syllabus mock tests for CA Final, November 2026, split by group: Group I (FR, AFM, Audit), Group II (DT & International Tax, IDT, IBS), or both groups. It runs the same way for CA Intermediate, January 2027, Group I, Group II or both groups, and for CA Foundation, January 2027, all four papers in one plan.

  • The papers: full-syllabus mocks for every subject, every chapter covered across the mocks with more weight on the most-asked. Brand-new questions on the latest ICAI pattern for your level (in Final and Inter, 30% MCQs and 70% descriptive, with a case-study based Paper 6 in CA Final; in Foundation, descriptive Papers 1 and 2 and 100-MCQ Papers 3 and 4), with every amendment applicable for your attempt tested. Each paper is 100 marks and 3 hours (CA Final IBS: 4 hours; CA Foundation Papers 3 and 4: 2 hours).
  • The flow: download a paper when you're ready, with no fixed dates within your access period. Write by hand in the full time, then scan and upload one PDF. You get one submission per paper, like the real exam.
  • The checking: your checked copy within 24 hours. Every line is checked on 50+ parameters, with the reason for every mark cut, the correct line to write, ICAI-style step-wise marks and a question-wise analysis of concept, presentation and working notes, plus detailed suggested answers.

You can read preview pages of the first mock of each subject on the plan page before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the meaning of test series in CA?

A CA test series is a set of exam-level papers that you write by hand, in the real time, and get checked, so you see where you lose marks before the actual exam. It can be chapter-wise, part-syllabus or full-syllabus.

CA test series kya hota hai, aur kaise join kare?

A CA test series is a set of exam-level practice papers: you write each one by hand in the real exam time, upload it, and get it back checked with marks and the reason for every mark cut. To join one, pick a series for your level and attempt, buy it on the provider's site, then download each paper when you're ready to write it. For CA Final November 2026, see our CA Final test series; for CA Intermediate January 2027, our CA Intermediate test series; and for CA Foundation January 2027, our CA Foundation test series.

Is ICAI's MTP a test series?

ICAI's Mock Test Papers are full papers on fixed dates, free, with an answer key within 48 hours. They work like a free scheduled series, except that you check your own copy: ICAI says students "self-assess their performance" (announcement, PDF (opens in a new tab)).

Chapter-wise or full-syllabus test series: which is better?

Chapter-wise while you are still studying, full-syllabus in the last one or two months. Close to the exam, only full-syllabus papers test the speed and stamina the real paper needs.

Is an online MCQ test series enough for CA?

For Foundation Papers 3 and 4, which are fully objective, MCQ practice is the right kind; how each is set, chapter by chapter, is in our CA Foundation Jan 2027 Maths mock test and CA Foundation Jan 2027 Economics mock test guides. In every CA Intermediate paper and in CA Final Papers 1 to 5, 70 of the 100 marks are descriptive (CA Inter pattern, CA Final pattern), so you need written, checked papers too.

When should I start a CA test series?

There's no ICAI rule. As a guide: start chapter tests while you study, and switch to full-syllabus papers about 8 to 10 weeks before the exam if you have the time, or now if your exam is a few weeks away.
